My girl, Jules, from Canines and Couture asked if I wanted to collaborate on a blog together. Since her blog is about all things fabulous (English bulldogs included), she asked if I would author a blog that discussed the reasons English bulldog puppies are so expensive. I graciously accepted her invitation and this is what I came up with:
Why are English bulldogs so expensive? Here’s what you may not know:
- Initial Investment: Finding healthy and beautiful English Bulldogs for breeding isn’t cheap. So many people say, “Oh, I don’t care about bloodlines,” without realizing the traits that a great bloodline imparts on the bulldog breed. Some of the most fabulous bloodlines are filled with champions. These champions highly match the qualifications set by the AKC and other recognized kennel clubs. Finding the perfect bloodline is a difficult, time consuming, and expensive task. This type of breeding stock can cost a breeder anywhere from $6,000- $12,000. Even with the huge cost of this purchase, there is no guarantee that the puppy will be fertile.
- Labor Required: The labor required to raise a litter of puppies is extremely expensive. English bulldog puppies require 24-hour care for the first 3 weeks and as a result, payroll expenses can become almost astronomical. There is no way that anyone could possibly stay awake 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 3 weeks, which means that a responsible breeder must hire someone to fill in the gaps. Between weeks 4-8, the puppies require attention all day long to ensure they are growing sufficiently and are well socialized. Although this time period is not as costly as the first 3 weeks, it still comes at a price.
- Social Media, Website Presence, and Advertising: Although Facebook pages are free, posting photos, updates, and pups for sale takes a great amount of effort and time to manage. The same goes for a website. Constantly updating a website with testimonials, posting pictures of new pups, and responding to inquiries from a website and/or Facebook can take 3-5 hours per day. Advertising on Google, Facebook, or Bing also comes at a price. It’s easy to spend anywhere from $600- $900 a month on advertising alone.
An image is much more informative than a bunch of arbitrary words and numbers, so I’ve created the above infographic, which shows approximately how much we spend on each litter of puppies. I used a fair price, per hour rate for our area ($12) and even calculated my “pay” at the same rate. I’m sure that the majority of the people who read this blog make much more than $12/hour. As you can tell, there’s not much money to be made in correctly breeding healthy English bulldog puppies. We breed because we have a true love for the breed.
The main point I’d like you to take away from this post is that a great breeder charges more than a backyard breeder. I know that some people have budgets which prevent them from purchasing a $3,000 puppy but let’s be honest: if you can’t afford the initial investment of an expensive English bulldog, you can’t afford the medical expenses of a cheap English bulldog. It’s unfair to purchase a puppy when you can’t afford to provide the care they need. There are too many bulldogs in rescues right now because people gambled on a bad breeder and lost.
